Compared to modern Kantō, Kansai is linked to the past, and known for its historical temples, shrines, palaces, gardens, and architecture. Kansai and Kantō are the two most populous areas of Honshū, the largest island of Japan, and much like Johto and Kanto, represent a harmony of contrasting cultures living together. Johto is based on the real Kansai region in Japan. Junichi Masuda has stated in his director's column that the kanji that inspired the name mean 'castle palace' (城都) or 'lattice-shaped palace' (条都) this meaning is connected to the city of Nara, which was the basis for Violet City. Players begin their journey in New Bark Town, where Professor Elm offers either Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile to beginning Pokémon Trainers. It is also the setting of Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon HeartGold, and Pokémon SoulSilver. First explored in Pokémon Gold and Silver, it is home to an additional 100 Pokémon that were not present in the previous games. It was the second core series region to be introduced. Johto is located west of Kanto, which together form a joint landmass that is south of Sinnoh and Sinjoh Ruins.
